Research Library & Archives
The Museums of the Bethel Historical Society collect, preserve, organize, and make available to the public all forms of information relating to the region. Our holdings include books, pamphlets, diaries, letters, photographs, maps, atlases, gazetteers, scrapbooks, periodicals, audio/video recordings, microforms, and ephemera. Our research collections are particularly strong for Bethel, western Maine, and the White Mountain region of Maine and New Hampshire.
Location, Access and User Fees
The Research Library & Archives is currently located on the second floor of the Dr. Moses Mason House barn, though current plans call for its relocation to the “Huntoon Center” at the Robinson House (next door) in 2017. The Research Library & Archives are open to the public year-round by appointment. Because of our small staff, we ask that those wishing to conduct research call 207-824-2908 or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org before visiting so that information can be gathered pertaining to specific requests before arrival. The MBHS Research Library is a private facility, with public access, that is supported by member contributions, research fees and gifts to the Annual Fund. Research is conducted at all times under the supervision of the staff or authorized volunteers. User fees: members and high school/college students, free; Non-members: donation. Appointments are required.
Photocopying is permitted in some parts of the collection. Photocopies (per sheet) are 10 cents for members and 25 cents for non-members. We reserve the right to place other restrictions on certain portions of our collections, depending on the nature of the research, including, but not restricted to, possible publication. Responsibility for observance of copyright law rests with the patron. Please note that the library collections are non-circulating.
Remote Research Request
We are pleased to offer a remote research service for those who cannot visit us in person. For a prepaid, non-refundable hourly fee ($10 for members; $15 for non-members), staff and trained volunteers will search for specific information in appropriate catalogs, genealogies, town histories, cemetery records, published vital records, microfilmed newspapers, and directories. For each hour of contracted research, we will provide photocopies or scans of the most pertinent material and will advise you of the sources we’ve consulted. We regret that we cannot search in unindexed manuscript material.
An initial five to ten minute search can be provided for free. In most cases, this will be limited to providing an estimate of time required to research your topic, and of the probability that relevant items can be located. You may contact us at email@example.com or 207-824-2908.
In a letter or e-mail, please describe what information you are seeking and list sources you have already checked.

Requests will be answered (usually within 3 to 4 weeks) in the order in which they are received.
