Written by Scott Andrews, curator and research director of the Ski Museum of Maine, this centennial history of the Chisholm Ski Club describes how organized skiing first appeared in Rumford in 1917 thanks to several local ski enthusiasts; so successful was this effort that within a few years some of Maine’s most spectacular winter carnivals were taking place there.  The Chisholm Ski Club has produced four Olympians and has hosted one World Ski Championship, plus numerous important regional and national ski competitions.  Black Mountain, which opened for skiing in 1961 under the Club’s auspices, remains a significant recreational asset for Rumford and other towns in the western Maine, and its history forms a significant part of this volume.
